with the Bridgewater Police Department on May 20, 1970.The following year he was promoted to Deputy Chief and served the Town
in that capacity for the next 29 years. In 1999 he became Acting Chief, and in July, 2000, with both pride and
humility, he accepted the position of Chief of Police.Shirlen devoted 32 years of his life to the
Town of Bridgewater,
a community he loved and was deeply committed to.He was proud to be a police officer which was
evident by the high standards he set for himself and in his steadfast practice
of fairness and honesty.
A man of quiet vision and patient
determination, Shirlen always gave his best to his family and friends, to his
colleagues and his community.Shirlen
had respect for people in all walks of life.Perhaps best known for his friendliness and his sense of humour, Shirlen
was a man who never seemed to forget a name or a person. He had a unique way of making everyone he met
or knew, feel special. To Shirlen, all
people were special.
Baseball was a passion of Shirlen’s and he
spent about 15 years as President of the Bridgewater Minor Baseball
Association, in addition to coaching and fundraising for the organization.Shirlen was also a loyal family man who loved
spending time with his family and working in his meat shop, Seamone’s
Meats. He could often be found there
when he wasn’t in the office or out delivering pies.
We will remember Shirlen most as a
genuinely good person – a rare and gentle soul with a heart “as big as an
ox”.Integrity, loyalty, generosity,
commitment – these are only but a few of the words that best describe Shirlen. He believed that anything was possible and
always kept a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity.Shirlen is deeply missed by all of us, but
especially by his family, friends, colleagues and his beloved community of Bridgewater.
The organizing committee is extremely
honoured that his family has allowed us to help keep Shirlen’s magnificent
spirit alive through the incorporation of the Shirlen Seamone Memorial
Award.
